How to Apply Background Colors to a Table on Word

Tables are usually used to represent data. While tables are useful for presenting data, they are often not interesting-looking. While we cannot change data, we can represent it in a creative way. If you want your tables to look more interesting and attractive, then applying background color to tables on Word could help. Background colors are used to create a visual distinction between the contents of a table and its background. Background colors also help set apart columns and rows in tables, making them easier to read.

In this article, you will get a step-by-step guide on how to apply background color to your table on Word for stylish and easy formatting. You can introduce background color to a table on Word using various methods. Here’s how: 

Method 1: Creating a New Table

Create a fresh new table on Word and apply color to it:

Step 1: Go to the Insert tab on the ribbon and select the Table drop-down arrow.

Step 2: Drag the cursor across the grid to select the number of rows and columns you require.

Step 3: Now, once the table is created, select the cell or multiple cells that you want to apply the background color to.

Step 4: Go to the Table Design tab. Here you can change the background color, border size & style, etc. You can also change the color of the table’s lines on Word using border size and style.

Step 5: Select the Shading drop-down arrow and select any color you want as your background from Theme Colors or Standard Colors. It will apply the same background color to your selected cell.

This is the first method through which you can create a new table on Word and apply background colors to it.

Method 2: Editing Existing Table

Make changes to the background colors of existing or already created tables on Word.

Step 1: Select the cell or multiple cells from the table whose background color you want to change.

Step 2: Right-click and you will get a list of menus to select from.

Step 3: Select Borders and Shading from that list of menus. A new dialog box will appear.

Step 4: Now, select the Shading tab within the Borders and Shading dialog box.

Step 5: Click on the Fill drop-down arrow.

Step 6: Select any color from Theme Colors or Standard Colors that you want as your background color in your table.

Step 7: Click on the Apply to drop-down arrow and select the cell or table option according to the way you want to apply your color. 

If you select Cell, then it will apply the selected color to the specific cells selected by you in step 1.If you select Table, then it will apply the selected color to the background of the whole table.

Step 8: Click on Ok. 

This is the second method through which you can add background color to a table on Word. By this method you can alter an existing table’s background color to something new and different. You can change the background color of selected cells as well as fill the entire table’s background with color.

Method 3: Using Design Tab

Make changes in the background color of the existing or already created tables on Word using the Design tab.

Step 1: Select the cell or multiple cells of the table whose background color you want to change on Word.

Step 2: Select the Design tab from the ribbon.

Step 3: Select the Page Borders tab within the Design tab. A new dialog box will appear.

Step 4: Now, select the Shading tab within the Borders and Shading dialog box.

Step 5: Click on the Fill drop-down arrow.

Step 6: Select any color from Theme Colors or Standard Colors that you want as your background color in your table.

Step 7: Click on the Apply to drop-down arrow and select the cell or table options depending on how and where you want to apply the background color. 

If you select Cell, then it will apply the selected color to the specific cells selected by you in step 1. If you select Table, it will apply the selected color to the background of the whole table.

Step 8: Click on Ok. 

This is the third method by which you can alter a table’s background color using the Design tab on Word’s ribbon.
