Jio 5g Availability: How to Activate 5g on Your Jio Sim

Tuba by Tuba
February 20, 2023

Reliance Jio, one of the biggest Indian telecom companies, has, at last, started rolling out its 5G services in India. Currently, 5G service will only be available in specific regions of India. However, the telecom giant promises to bring 5G services to each corner of India by the end of 2023. Jio 5G is available in popular metro cities like Delhi, Varanasi, Kolkata, Chennai, and Mumbai. By the end of this year, 5G services will be available in other cities like Bangalore and Hyderabad. So you might wonder whether you need a new sim card to get Jio 5G services.

In this guide, we have discussed the process step-wise of how to use Jio 5g on your smartphone using an existing 4G SIM.

Jio 5G

Jio 5G or Jio True 5G is the fifth-gen cellular connectivity offered by Reliance Jio, where they promise to provide low latency and high-speed internet. This will be a standalone (SA) network. Unlike Airtel 5G, Jio 5G will not rely on the existing 4G framework. This gives Reliance an upper hand over the competitors in terms of stability, speed, and coverage.

According to Reliance Jio, with the Jio 5G, you can expect to speed up to 1gbps on your existing sim.

What is the Jio Welcome Offer?

Jio has rolled out its 5G services in several Indian metro cities. So if you are a Kolkata, Mumbai, Delhi, or Varanasi resident, you can enrol in the “Jio Welcome Offer”.

This is a trial program that can only be joined via invitation. Currently, Reliance Jio is conducting beta experimentation, and once you register with this trial program, you will get 5G services on your smartphone. Jio 5G services are available for prepaid and postpaid plans and are expected to start at approximately INR 239.

Check the Jio 5G compatibility of your smartphone

Before availing of Jio 5G services, you must determine whether your smartphone supports 5G brands. You can check Google or the mobile box to know whether your smartphone supports 5G or not.

Steps to follow to activate Jio 5G on your smartphone

Android

Here is a step-by-step guide to activating Jio 5G on Android.

  1. First, you must ensure that Jio 5G is available in your area.
  2. Next, open the Settings application on your mobile phone.
  3. Click on the “Mobile Networks” option.
  4. Next, find your Jio Sim profile (if you have two sim cards) on which you want to enable 5G services.
  1. Next, navigate to the “Preferred Network Type” tab and find the option with 5G and select it.

If you have followed all these steps correctly, a 5G symbol will be available on your status bar for a couple of seconds. This indicates that 5G services have been activated on your smartphone. To get the 5G symbol, make sure that mobile data is switched on.

iPhone

If you own iPhone 12 and above, you can use Jio 5G services. Here is the step to step process:

  1. Find the “Settings” applications on your iPhone
  2. Now find the cellular menu in the settings option
  3. Next select “Cellular Data Options.”
  4. To switch on 5G on your device, click on the “Voice And Data” option.
  5. Next, select the “5G Auto” or “5G On” option.

Now, if there is Jio 5g availability in the region, you will immediately see a 5G symbol on the right-hand side corner of the screen. This indicates that the 5G service has been activated on your device.

Apple is yet to launch 5G support on devices in India. However, according to a circular by the Department of Telecommunications(DoT), Apple will be rolling out the beta versions of their 5G on some devices. After that, a new update will be available on your iPhone in a couple of months.

How to check whether your area has 5G support or not?

First, you must download the SpeedTest application by Ookla on your smartphone. This app is available both in Google Play Store and the App Store. After downloading the application, follow these steps:

  • On the home screen, choose the map option
  • Find the blue spots on the map
  • These blue dots represent 5G coverage. You can double-tap on the point to zoom in and get the exact details.

Now you can visit any nearby place with your 5G enabled device and experience high-speed internet.

Once you learn to activate 5g in Jio sim, you can enjoy high-speed internet and other services like never before. Additionally, you can easily download any movie or stream videos within a couple of seconds.
